Leonard Donald “Don” Schmidt, 97, passed away Wednesday morning, August 12, 2020 in the Commons at Orlando Lutheran Towers, Orlando, FL. He was born to the late August and Eva Schmidt on August 8, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois.
“Don” a World War ll Army veteran, received his engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and had a 40-year career with AT&T in Chicago, New York and New Jersey. He was devoted to his family, his church and his community. During his 37 years of retirement in Florida, he remained active in the Lutheran Church, sharing his passion for singing in both church and the Bach Festival Choir in Winter Park. He also earned an honorary degree from the Learning Institute for Elders at UCF. He and his late wife Dolores, married for 70 years, enjoyed traveling the world, a love for learning, volunteering and the joy of family.
Preceded in death by his parents, August & Eva Schmidt, sister Dolores Jordon, beloved wife Dolores Schmidt, and son Russell Schmidt. “Don" is survived by his sister, Charlotte Morales and brother Clifford Schmidt, both of California, his son, Glen Schmidt, of Orlando, FL, his daughter, Carlen Ginzl, Deland, FL, grandson, Kyle Ginzl (Krystal) of Washington, DC, granddaughter Erika Mather (Johnny) of Tyler, Texas, 3 great grandchildren (and two on the way), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Social Distancing Graveside Service will be held on Monday, August 17th, 10:30am at Glen Haven Memorial Park, 2300 Temple Dr, Winter Park, FL 32789.
