Richard Edmund "Dick" Booth, 83, of Apopka FL passed away on September 6, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born in Valhalla, NY on May 19, 1938, to the late John E. Booth and Mildred Booth Stuart.
Richard a native of Long Beach, CA entered the USMC at age 18. Completed his Basic Training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, CA in November 1955. Then he was assigned to Camp Pendleton, CA where he completed the Basic Armament Infantry Training course in January 1956.
Between 1956 and 1960 he served 14 months in Okinawa Japan and 39 months at Camp Pendleton, CA.
In February 1961 Richard was assigned to Camp Lejeune, NC and then in April 1962 he was assigned to Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. While on leave, visiting his mother in Agawam, MA, Richard met and then married Eleanor "Ellie" Schmidt 1 year later June 15, 1963.
Eleanor would then join Richard back in Puerto Rico and soon the two started their family. After Puerto Rico his assignments included Camp Lejeune, NC, Knoxville, TN, Quantico, VA and Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. On July 31, 1976, after 21 years of service Richard retired from the US Marine Corps. Richard was a Veteran of the Vietnam War having served in country. Ultimately earning his rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
For his achievements and accomplishments GySgt. Booth received many military medals, ribbons, and badges. Some of his various honors include, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Combat Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. Sharpshooter and Expert Marksmen badges. GySgt. Booth also achieved "Master Instructor" level in 1973.
After the Marine Corps Richard worked in Civil Service as a Technical Writer, Customer Service and Building Security. Richard enjoyed refereeing high school football games for many years. Richard was active in several Veterans' organizations such as, The Marine Corps League (CPL Larry E. Smedley Detachment #064), The Orange County Young Marines of the Marine Corps League and The Military Order of The Devil Dogs.
Richard known to his grandson as "Gramps", cheered him on at soccer matches for 10 years. He also taught him the skills to become an avid bowler going to league play and tournaments as Richard too was an avid bowler.
He was devoted to his family, extremely knowledgeable, organized, and resilient. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, computer solitaire, nature, animals, college, and national football games.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor A. Booth of Apopka, FL; daughter Sharon M. Teague and her husband Marvin D. Teague of Apopka, FL; son Dennis M. Booth and his wife Shannon M. Booth of Sanford, FL; sisters Joanne Hackensmith and husband Craig Hackensmith of Gilbert, AZ and Linda Miodonka and husband Tony Miodonka of Oxford, CT; grandson, Nicholas B. Teague of Apopka, FL; also, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by son Thomas Edmund Booth.
On Saturday, October 2, 2021, at 10:00 am the funeral service will be held at the grave site with military honors held at Highland Memory Gardens 3329 E. Semoran Blvd. Apopka, FL
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's name may be made to The Marine Corps League (CPL Larry Smedley Detachment #064) or the Alzheimer's Association.
