Thi (Mai) Smallwood

d. May 1, 2024

Orlando, FL

Thi (Mai) Smallwood, born on October 22, 1937, in Hanoi, Vietnam, passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, love, and strength. She is survived by her son Paul, daughter-in-law Annie, grandchildren Marianne, Alexander, and Paul Jr., and great-granddaughter Beatrix Mai.

Ms. Mai's journey began amidst the turmoil of the Vietnam War, where she faced adversity with remarkable courage even at a young age. Born and raised in the North, she made the arduous journey to the South, settling in Saigon, where she later became a successful restaurant owner. It was amidst the clatter of dishes and the aroma of fresh basil and grilled pork that she met her beloved husband, Woody Smallwood, marking the start of a new chapter in her life.

As the war drew to a close, Ms. Mai and her family immigrated to the United States, seeking a new beginning. In Florida, she continued her culinary passion, opening one of the first Vietnamese restaurants near Orlando. Her dedication to her craft and warm hospitality endeared her to the local community, introducing them to the rich flavors of Vietnamese cuisine including pho noodle soup and other celebrated dishes.

Despite the passing of her husband in 1984, Ms. Mai's remained spirited. Retiring from the restaurant services sector, she embraced her role as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her home became a haven of love and laughter, where she nurtured her family with boundless affection and delectable meals.

Ms. Mai's legacy transcends borders and generations. She taught us the power of resilience, grounded us in our heritage, and ingrained in us the importance of family above all else. Though we bid her farewell with heavy hearts, we find solace in the enduring impact of her love and wisdom.

Ms. Mai, rest in peace and in our hearts, you are Always Loving, Always Loved.
