Obituary

Charles A. Davis, Jr., 87, of Longwood, Florida passed away Sunday, June 14th, 2020, in AdventHealth Hospice Care, Altamonte Springs, Florida.He was born August 4th, 1932, in Washington, D.C., to Charles Alton Davis, Sr. and Marion Bryant Davis. He graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a Master of Divinity in 1957 and served as Pastor for Wampum United Presbyterian Church in Wampum, Pennsylvania and North United Presbyterian Church in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania from 1957-1967. Charles was Associate Executive Presbyter for Louisville-Union Presbytery in Louisville, Kentucky from 1968-1973 and Associate Minister at First United Presbyterian Church in Pompano Beach, Florida from 1973-1977. He then served the Westminster Presbytery in St. Petersburg, Florida, as an educator. He provided heartfelt and compelling spiritual guidance to many families during these years, performing weddings, holding funeral services, acting as a youth counselor, and facilitating church services. He enjoyed helping others and served his parishioners well for many years.Afterward, Charles returned to school and received his Executive Master of Business Administration from Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He utilized his education as a Quality Management Instructor for the Quality College of Philip Crosby Associates, for over ten years, traveling to Saudi Arabia, Brussels, Mexico City, and across the United States, to teach Fortune 500 companies how to have “zero defects.”He was a loving and devoted partner, father, brother, and son. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling, with Dave, his partner of forty years, across the globe. Their trips included Australia, Egypt, Morocco, Japan, China, and much of Europe. A favorite stop was New York City to see Broadway Shows. A vacation to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon with his former wife and two children was a fondly remembered highlight from earlier years. He enjoyed a wide range of music, most notably, Classical, Opera, Musicals, and Jazz. Charles was an avid reader of Fiction and Non-fiction, and was determined to finish a thousand-page biography about Ulysses S. Grant, even while in the hospital. He was a Disc Jockey for his college radio station while at American University receiving his Bachelor of Science. He sang in a barbershop quartet for several years. He was very active most of his life, liked to swim, and learned how to scuba dive mid-life. Charles was a great cook. He will be dearly missed by his family, many wonderful friends, and all who knew him.Charles is survived by partner Lloyd David Griffith of Longwood, Florida; son Mark Davis and his wife Cindy of Coral Springs, Florida; daughter Elaine Davis of Orlando, Florida; grandson Robert Davis and his wife April; granddaughter Kim Fennick; grandson Matthew Davis; great-grandchildren Blake and Colin (sons of Robert and April); sister Donna Reynolds of Alexandria, Virginia; stepdaughter Dana Peterson and her husband Jarrell of Merritt Island, Florida; step grandson Joshua Peterson; and step granddaughter Mallory Peterson. He is predeceased by his parents Charles Alton Davis, Sr. and Marion Bryant Davis; and former wife Shirley Davis Ruggles, mother of Mark and Elaine.A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 27th, 2020, in the Chapel at Highland Memory Gardens, 3329 East Semoran Blvd., Apopka, FL 32703; interment in Sanctuary of Peace to follow.
