Mamie Rae Walsh

September 23, 1932 ~ December 16, 2021 (age 89)

Obituary

Mamie Rae Lewis Walsh passed away peacefully on December 16, 2021.
She was born on September 23, 1932 in Ogden, Utah to Bessie C. Jones Lewis and Melvin H. Lewis.
She graduated from Utah State University in 1955 where she pursued her love of music and science. She was an extraordinarily talented musician playing the flute, piano, and cello. While at the Utah State, she played the flute in the marching band and orchestra on a music scholarship, while earning a bachelor's degree in medical technology with a specialty in bacteriology. After graduation, she began a long career as a Medical Technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Her first job was at Pittsfield General Hospital in Massachusetts. There she met Anthony (Tony) Walsh, who shared her love of bacteriology, and they married in 1957. After a honeymoon trip to Utah the couple moved to Florida, first to Orlando until 1962, then to Gainesville until 1970 where Mamie supported Tony as he earned his PhD, and then back to Orlando, where she resided until her death. In the Orlando area she worked at Holiday Hospital for many years and retired from Humana Hospital-Kissimmee in 1993, after many years there.
Mamie and Tony were a great team always discussing work and their shared love of microbiology. They consulted each other when they had a challenging situation, like something they just couldn't identify, and together they always figured it out.
Mamie loved and always supported her family. She could be found on the sideline of many Little League baseball games and in the stands for band or choir concerts. She had a great sense of adventure and loved to travel and eat good food. She had quite the green thumb and her garden was well tended and always full of colorful flowers and greenery. Mamie also had a tender heart for stray cats who didn't stay outside for long as they eventually moved inside and became one of the family.
She is survived by her daughters Anne Reynolds (Greg Lockeby) of Orlando, Florida and Clare Walsh (Eileen Discher) of Statesboro, Georgia; her brother, Melvin P. Lewis of St. George, Utah; her grandchildren Sheena Jackson (Jordan Jackson) of Gillette, Wyoming, Daryl Zaldivar of West Pueblo, Colorado, Elizabeth Reynolds of Orlando, Florida, and Caleb Reynolds of Orlando Florida; and great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Keith Jackson, Anthony and Isabel Zaldivar.
She is proceeded in death by her husband of 53 years Anthony F. Walsh, her parents, and her sisters Mildred and Marilyn.
