Martha Prescott

Martha Ann Hicks Prescott was born August 19, 1921, in Oakland, Florida. She was the 5th of 10 children born to William and Lydia Hicks.

Martha and her siblings grew up in Orlando on Lake Jessamine, in an orange grove her father planted from seed, now known as Cypress Grove Park.

At 19 years old, she married Vernon Francis Prescott on October 12, 1940, in Sanford, Florida. Martha and Vernon had 2 children. James and Verna Ann or Tykie as we all knew her. They both died as young children. Martha and Vernon also raised 2 nieces, Peggy and Terrie Prescott, for eight years. Terrie was a baby and Peggy was 3 when they came to live with "Nana and Papa".

Martha had a hand in raising all of her siblings children at one time or another. She was "Aunt Nonie" to all of us. Those of us who lived near Aunt Nonie would run away from home to a better or easier life, or so we thought! Aunt Nonie would show us that home life wasn't so bad after all by giving us chores to do and within a day or two, we ran back home.

Aunt Nonie and Uncle Vernon would have a Halloween party every year for all of the neighborhood kids in their backyard. Uncle Vernon would roast hot dogs and marshmallows and have a big bonfire. He built a playhouse for us kids and at Halloween he would turn it into a fun house with scary things inside.

Aunt Nonie and Uncle Vernon always took in a stray dog when one came along. They would patch them up, fill their stomachs and they lived happily ever after. Those were lucky dogs.

Aunt Nonie was sharp as a tack and fiesty, right up until the last week of her passing. She lived a very blessed long life and will be missed by all her loved her.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 23rd, 10am at Highland Funeral Home, 3329 E. Semoran Blvd., Apopka FL., where the family will receive friends beginning at 9am. Mrs. Prescott will be laid to rest in Highland Memory Gardens, Apopka, FL.
