Mildred Avery

Mildred Doris (nee Pittman) Avery was born December 14, 1925 in the family farmhouse (built by her grandfather) in Micro, NC. She passed away August 1, 2020 at The Masonic Home of Florida in St. Petersburg, FL at the age of 94 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Harvey Glen Avery, and sisters Ola Mae Cox and Janice Shirley. Mildred is survived by her sister Clara Ann Beasley of Four Oaks, NC. She is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews including: Debra Corbett and Darlene Barnett, both of Smithfield, NC, Ramona Aragon and Gerald Beasley, both of Four Oaks, NC, Wayne Beasley of Pine Level, NC and Carolyn Rennie of Cary, NC and a large group of grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Patricia Stone, her niece. Other survivors include: sons Craig (Anita) Avery and Mark (Peggy) Avery, grandchildren Keith (Jennifer) Avery, Ryan (Whitney) Avery, Robert (Dayna) Tobyansen and Jessica (Ben) Ratcliff, Mark Anthony Avery and Allen (Bond) Avery. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren: Reagan, Wyatt, Zoey, Nicholas, Robert (Buddy), and Rhiannon. Mildred is also survived by a multitude of in-law in Erwin and Dunn, NC.

Mildred was the oldest of four daughters of Ransom and Lillian Pittman. As a child, she worked on the family farm, raising crops and animals, while attending school. She graduated Valedictorian of her class at Micro High School. After high school, she moved to Richmond, VA and worked as a file clerk for the Division of Motor Vehicles. She met her future husband Glen, on a bus trip one weekend, while traveling home to visit her family. Glen was in the Navy at the time. After marrying, they moved to many places, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Hawaii, and Waukegan, IL while Glen was in service to his country. Upon his retirement from the Navy, they settled in Orlando and Winter Park areas of FL.

Mildred was heavily involved with the Eastern Star, Local Pioneer 99. She held numerous state and local level positions, including Worthy Matron. She was also involved in many years with The First Covenant Church of Winter Park, FL. Mildred was always very interested in the lives of her large family and her many groups of friends.

Mildred has had a long and full journey here on earth. She was always of pleasant nature and kind spirit. We know a place has been prepared for her with the Lord.

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic concerns, the family will have a private viewing and services (immediate family members only) at Highland Funeral Home in Apopka, FL on August 10, 2020. On that same day, she will be buried, with her husband at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims, FL.
