Sally Mcbryde-Rose

February 7, 1927 — April 20, 2022

Sally McBryde-Rose, age 95, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2022, at Westminster Winter Park in Winter Park, Fla., with her family by her side. She was born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1927 to Colena and Luther Wilhoit and grew up in Daytona Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by husbands John McBryde and Dick Rose. She is survived by her children Malcolm (Theda) McBryde, Hugh (Monica) McBryde, Ryan (Laura) McBryde, and Frances Wilder; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Sally grew up in Daytona Beach, graduating from Seabreeze High School in 1944. She received a degree in physical therapy from Duke University, where she met and married John McBryde. In 1959, they moved to South Korea as Presbyterian medical missionaries with three children younger than age 7. During the next 10 years, she taught elementary school, treated patients, taught English, learned Korean, and gave birth to her youngest child, Frances. She and John returned to the U.S in 1968, settling in Winter Park. Fla., in 1969, where she worked as a physical therapist at Orange Memorial Hospital and helped to start both Orangewood Presbyterian Church and Orangewood Christian School. She served as the school's first headmaster after studying for and receiving a master's degree in education. John died in 1996, and in 2003, Sally married childhood classmate James Richard (Dick) Rose, with whom she enjoyed a life of travel and the North Carolina mountains until moving to Sarasota, Fla., in 2018. Dick died in March of 2021. Sally loved the works of Francis Schaeffer, C.S. Lewis, James Herriot, and A. A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh); always gave of herself unselfishly; and had a heart as big as all outdoors. A memorial service led by the Rev. Theda McBryde is planned for 2 p.m. May 7 at Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, Fort Defiance, Va., with family visitation starting at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, 28 Old Stone Church Lane, Fort Defiance, VA 24437. Mailing address: P.O. Box 118 Fort Defiance, VA 24437
